The Gippsland 3-Day Tour was first held in 1964 and since then has been held annually, enjoying a rich history with the winner placing their names amongst the who's who of not only Gippsland, but also Australian cycling champions.
All Gippsland cycling clubs joined forces to stage the first event, and continue to unite via club delegates to organise the 3 day Tour traditionally held over the Queens Birthday long weekend.
For many years the tour was open only to registered Gippsland cyclists, mainly due to the number and quality of local rides. It was not uncommon for organiser to accommodate 150+ cyctlists.
During the 1970's, Latrobe valley could boast many 3-Day Tour winners with John Trevorrow snaring 3 wins by the end of the decade.
By the '80's, the tour was becoming renowned for it's surgence of youth coming to the fore. Dave McFarlane after first winning in 1979, virtually owned the tour by the end of the decade with six wins. On the rare occasion Dave was unable to win, it was often another youngster who stepped up.
The history of the 3-Day Tour is a mirror in to the sport of cycling in Gippsland with many great champions. In a new century, the tour continues to be a major attraction on the Gippsland cycling calendar and in it's 45th year, is looking forward to raising it's profile and ensuring it's success for many years to come.
